3 Incredible Examples of Time Lapsed Photography (videos)

You've probably already heard of these two videos - The Mountain, and Aurora.  They are both incredible examples of time lapsed photography by Terje Sorgjerd, who is a passionate landscape and video photographer.  From his Facebook page:
I have been published many times in some of the world biggest press and media outlets including, but not limited to: CNN, NBC, USA Today, Reuters, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Weather Channel and The Washington Post, and Good Morning America.

I am probably most well known for my unique photos of the Iceland volcano Eyjafjallajokull, which erupted in 2010, leaving an immediate impact on our modern society halting air-traffic between North America and Europe for over a week.
Take a look at these three videos, and experience the Milky Way and Northern Lights in a unique way.

Genesis: Revisited (squeezing the round peg of science into the square hole of religion)

Many of us, Christian or not, are familiar with the story of Genesis.  It tells us how the universe, our Earth and it's inhabitants were created.  It is similar to other Mesopotamian creation myths and offers a monotheistic (single god) perspective.

But should it be taken literally?  Many Creationists will argue that it should. However, Michael Shermer has put forth a revised version of the myth.  Read on to watch a video, and read the transcript.  But first, let's review the story below...

The Story of Genesis

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
   in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Michael Shermer's Genenis:  Revisited
"To convey the logical absurdity of trying to squeeze the round peg of science into the square hole of religion, I penned the following scientific revision of the Genesis creation story. It is not intended as a sacrilege of the poetic beauty of Genesis; rather, it is a mere extension of what the creationists have already done to Genesis in their insistence that it be read not as mythic saga but as scientific prose. If Genesis were written in the language of modern science, it would read something like this."

The transcript...

In the beginning — specifically on October 23, 4004 B.C., at noon — out of quantum foam fluctuation God created the Big Bang. The bang was followed by cosmological inflation. God saw that the Big Bang was very big, too big for creatures that could worship him, so He created the earth. And darkness was upon the face of the deep, so He commanded hydrogen atoms (which He created out of Quarks and other subatomic goodies) to fuse and become helium atoms and in the process release energy in the form of light. And the light maker he called the sun, and the process He called fusion. And He saw the light was good because now He could see what he was doing. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be lots of fusion light makers in the sky. Some of these fusion makers appear to be more than 4,004 light years from Earth. In fact, some of the fusion makers He grouped into collections He called galaxies, and these appeared to be millions and even billions of light years from Earth, so He created “tired light” — light that slows down through space — so that the 4004 B.C. creation myth might be preserved. And created He many wondrous splendors, including Red Giants, White Dwarfs, Quasars, Pulsars, Nova and Supernova, Worm Holes, and even Black Holes out of which nothing can escape. But since God cannot be constrained by nothing (can God make a planet so big that he could not lift it?), He created Hawking radiation through which information can escape from Black Holes. This made God even more tired than tired light, and the evening and the morning were the second day.

And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the continents drift apart by plate tectonics. He decreed sea floor spreading would create zones of emergence, and He caused subduction zones to build mountains and cause earthquakes. In weak points in the crust God created volcanic islands, where the next day He would place organisms that were similar to but different from their relatives on the continents, so that still later created creatures called humans would mistake them for evolved descendants. And in the land God placed fossil fuels, natural gas, and other natural resources for humans to exploit, but not until after Day Six. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

And God saw that the land was lonely, so He created animals bearing their own kind, declaring Thou shalt not evolve into new species, and thy equilibrium shall not be punctuated. And God placed into the land’s strata, fossils that appeared older than 4004 B.C. And the sequence resembled descent with modification. And the evening and morning were the fourth day.

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creatures that hath life, the fishes. And God created great whales whose skeletal structure and physiology were homologous with the land mammals he would create later that day. Since this caused confusion in the valley of the shadow of doubt God brought forth abundantly all creatures, great and small, declaring that microevolution was permitted, but not macroevolution. And God said, “Natura non facit saltum” — Nature shall not make leaps. And the evening and morning were the fifth day.

And God created the pongidids and hominids with 98 percent genetic similarity, naming two of them Adam and Eve, who were anatomically fully modern humans. In the book in which God explained how He did all this, in chapter one He said he created Adam and Eve together out of the dust at the same time, but in chapter two He said He created Adam first, then later created Eve out of one of Adam’s ribs. This caused further confusion in the valley of the shadow of doubt, so God created Bible scholars and theologians to argue the point.

And in the ground placed He in abundance teeth, jaws, skulls, and pelvises of transitional fossils from pre-Adamite creatures. One he chose as his special creation He named Lucy. And God realized this was confusing, so he created paleoanthropologists to sort it out. And just as He was finishing up the loose ends of the creation God realized that Adam’s immediate descendants who lived as farmers and herders would not understand inflationary cosmology, global general relativity, quantum mechanics, astrophysics, biochemistry, paleontology, population genetics, and evolutionary theory, so He created creation myths. But there were so many creation stories throughout the land that God realized this too was confusing, so he created anthropologists, folklorists, and mythologists to settle the issue.

By now the valley of the shadow of doubt was overrunneth with skepticism, so God became angry, so angry that God lost His temper and cursed the first humans, telling them to go forth and multiply (but not in those words). They took God literally and 6,000 years later there are six billion humans. And the evening and morning were the sixth day.

By now God was tired, so God said, “Thank me its Friday,” and He made the weekend. It was a good idea.

In Conclusion...

What do you think?  Should the story of Genesis be taken literally?  If not, does it have room for science, or are they mutually exclusive?

The Solar Dynamics Observatory: Year One Video Collage

NASA has recently released a video collage from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). In the last year, the sun has gone from its quietest period in years (the solar minimum) to the activity marking the beginning of solar cycle 24. SDO has delivered incredible images of solar flares, eruptions of prominences, and the early stages of coronal mass ejections. This video demonstrates some of the most amazing events over the last year.

According to NASA’s website, in the order they appear in the video, the events are:

1. Prominence Eruption from AIA in 304 Angstroms on March 30, 2010

I can't help but wonder what we'll discover in the future as our technology improves even further.  Imagine what other stars look like?  What about a red giant?  White dwarf?  Neutron star?  Watching this video really puts things in perspective for me - I've watched it a dozen times, and can't help but feel that our planet is just so tiny, so insignificant, compared to the complexities and magnitudes of our solar system, galaxy, and universe.  I can only imagine what the video for Year 2 will comprise.

The Russian Dead Alien Video

On April 20th, 2011, The Daily Mail reported, "Body of 'dead alien' is found in frozen wastes of Siberia after claims of UFO hurtling to Earth... but is it an elaborate hoax?"

Igor Molovic, one of the two teens who discovered the alien, was quoted as saying, 'We couldn't believe it when we saw it. And what was spooky is that there was no sign of the spaceship. Perhaps that was taken away and the body overlooked."  They took a video of their discovery, and promptly uploaded it to YouTube, where it went viral in a few days, gathering nearly a million plays in only a few days.

Believers in UFOs suggest the body could have been left behind by extraterrestrial visitors after an accident, or missed by Russian military alien experts clearing up after a crash. The area is a known UFO hotspot with dozens of sightings reported every year.  In fact, the discovery follows reports of a UFO in a nearby region about a month ago.

And without further adieu, here is the video:

UFOlogists were quick to comment, suggesting this video was more evidence for proof-positive that Earth is being visited by aliens:

"There is a constant drip drip of info at the moment... It feels a matter of time before an anouncement. First the US army's senior figures talking about UFO's shutting the missle silo's down on numerous occaision... the released FBI files regarding crashed saucers... The Welsh Roswell incident being revisited... Frankly, I have an open mind (as you can tell!), for me though, the multi angle footage of the UFO in Isreal is all I need. You cannot fake that surely. If the Aliens can swing by Manchester and pick me up, that would be great..."
And another...
"It's so lame how people always get thrilled by having another excuse to shout "Fake! fake!" every time something weird shows up. Unless proven otherwise, this is in fact plausible."
So... was it a hoax?

Yup.  The Siberian alien was created by two Russian teens, Timur Hilall and Kirill Vlasov, who confessed to the hoax after police in Irkutsk, Siberia, investigated. The police also found the “alien” figure hidden in one of the teen’s bedrooms.  To quote one of the officers, 'It was lying under his bed and an examination of it revealed it had been made of bread crumbs which were covered in chicken skin.'

As expected, conspiracy theorists have already started accusing the government of a cover up.   And there were more comments after the hoax was revealed:

"We know what we saw. Powerful people in the military just don't want us to see this."
"Is anybody looking at the picture of the alien model on this web page? It is not the same as the alien filmed in the snow. For one, the model is blue. The alien has skin and is orange. Is anybody paying attention? This model was made after the fact, to try and discredit the actual alien body. The model does not resemble the actual alien body. Is anyone out there not an idiot?"
Really?  Even when presented with proof that the two teens hoaxed the whole thing, people still cling to the beliefs, invoking the fallacious "conspiracy theory" argument.  Why not invoke Occam's Razor once more:  is it more likely that this was a hoax, or that an alien being was discovered by a couple of teenage boys?

Sigh.

Do Ouija Boards Really Work? Spoiler Alert: They Don't.

As children, we've probably all tried a Ouija board at one time or another.  Remember how it went?  Two or more players would gather around the board, and each would place two fingers on the planchette (the pointer).  Each person would then ask the board a question one at a time, and, if there was a connection to the spirit world, the planchette would begin to move across the board, spelling out the answer.  Sometimes, the board will answer with a simple "yes" or "no", sometimes it will spell it out.

Generally, using a Ouija board is harmless.  However, there are times when the connection to the spirit world can go very wrong.  Sometimes, the connection will be to an evil spirit, a demon, or devil.  In order to avoid such an evil link, one must follow the five rules of the Ouija board...

Ouija Board Rule #1
Never play with the Ouija board alone.  This is for your safety both physically and mentally.  Ouija board experiences are occasionally extreme and should this occur you will need someone with which to support you, both during and after the occurrence.

Ouija Board Rule #2
Do not allow the planchette to count down through the numbers or backwards through the alphabet.  Doing could result in the spirit escaping from the board, allowing it to terrorize you and the other players indefinitely.

Ouija Board Rule #3
Always place a silver object upon the Ouija board before playing.  Silver is known (ahem) for its power to repel evil energies.

Ouija Board Rule #4
Never, ever mention ‘God’, as it is believed that entities contacted through the Ouija board are generally ‘evil’ in nature.  Some may appear "good" at first, but it is likely a demon who is playing tricks.

Ouija Board Rule #5
When you are done playing, say ‘goodbye’.  Failure to close the Ouija board session by saying ‘goodbye’ may result in the contacted entity remaining present long after you have finished playing.

Pretty scary stuff.  So what's really going on?

The movement of the pointer on the Ouija board can be attributed to something called the ideomotor effect.  Humans might not be aware of it, but suggestions can be made to the mind by others, by observations, or by other mediums – and these suggestions can influence the mind and affect motor behavior.

According to The Skeptic Dictionary, tests devised by American psychologist William James, French chemist Michel Chevreul, English scientist Michael Faraday, and American psychologist Ray Hyman have demonstrated that many phenomena attributed to spiritual or paranormal forces, or to mysterious "energies," are actually due to ideomotor action. Furthermore, these tests demonstrate that "honest, intelligent people can unconsciously engage in muscular activity that is consistent with their expectations" (Hyman 1999). They also show that suggestions that can guide behavior can be given by subtle clues (Hyman 1977).

So, when people go to play the Ouija board, they know in advance of what it’s supposed to do, they (often) expect it to give some sort of results, and unconsciously, they guide the pointer so that it gives “answers”.  There are no demons.  There are no spirits.  It’s just a piece of plastic/cardboard.  Nothing more.

After all  “If there really is an afterlife, I'll bet the best way to contact it is through a plastic, mass-produced board game from Milton Bradley! --Mad Magazine”

12 Natural Wonders of the World

Our planet is home to a number of natural wonders, and it’s difficult to pick out the "best" ones since, at least for this post, the list is subjective.  Inspired by the 7 Natural Wonders of the World website, I decided to pick out a dozen of my favorite.  Here are 12 awe-inspiring natural wonders of the world which go to show that you don’t need to invoke the paranormal, myths, legends, and folklore to see the stuff of dreams

Click on the images below to see the larger version.

Angel Falls:  the world’s highest waterfall with a height of 979 meters (just shy of a kilometer!).  Incredibly enough, because the height is so great, much of the water is evaporated before it even reaches the ground below.

Chocolate Hills:  An example of conical Karst topography, and located in Bohol, Philippines, there are over 1,776 hills composed of grass-covered limestone.  During  dry season, the grass dries up, forming the chocolate color.

Davolja Varos (the Devi’s Town):  Features just over 200 formations described as 'earth pyramids', ranging in height from 2-15 m tall.  They were created by the erosion of the soil in an area that previously had intense volcanic activity.

The Aurora (Borealis and Australis):  A natural display of light visible at night and at the poles of the Earth, which occurs when charged particles directed by the Earth’s magnetic field collide high up in the ionosphere.

Jeita Grotto:  Two karstic limestone caves with a length of nearly 9 kilometres.  The dissolution of limestone by carbonic acid formed this majestic cave over millions of years.

Victoria Falls:  The Smoke That Thunders” is located in southern Africa and is the world’s largest waterfall at a height of 108 m and a width of 1,708 m.

Meteor Crator:  A meteorite impact crater in Arizona, it is 1.2 km across, 170 m deep, and is surrounded by a rim 45m in height.  It is approximately 50,000 years old, and was created with a 50 m wide nickel-iron meteorite slammed into the Earth at some 12.8 km/s (72,420 km/h).

Aldabra:  The world’s second largest coral atoll is located in the Indian Ocean.  Loosely speaking, an atoll is a ring shaped ribbon reef enclosing a lagoon.  Aldabra is home to the Aldabra tortoise, and is also considered a World Heritage Site.

Perito Mereno Glacier:  Located in Argentina, it is 30 km in length and is considered the third largest reserve of fresh water in the world.  It is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that is actually growing.

Tsingy de Bemaraha:  A wonderful example of Karst topography, the park is located near the western coast of Madagascar and is considered a World Heritage Site.  It’s undisturbed forests, lakes, and mangroves form the habitat for rare and endangered lemurs and birds.

Uluru:  Also know as Ayers Rock, it is a huge sandstone rock formation located in Australia.  It is one of Australia’s most recognized icons, and measures in at 9.4 km in circumference, and 348 m in height.  An island mountain, it survived as the surrounding rocks eroded due to its lack of jointing and parting at the bedding surfaces.

Purnululu National Park:  Located in the north east of Australia, the park is famous for its striped sandstone domes, alternating in orange and grey bands.  The banding of the domes is due to differences in the clay’s content and the porosity of the sandstone layers.

The Milky Way:  The galaxy in which we live is home to an estimated 100 billion stars or more, and has a diameter of 100,000 light years.  Under near-perfect conditions (zero pollution, very dark, clear atmosphere, etc), the naked eye can detect upwards of 45,000 stars.
